FIRM plans have now been submitted for the former Gaskells Carpets factory site in Rishton.

Land between Parker Street and Wheatfield Road could soon play host to 75 properties, under proposals from Gleeson Homes.

Travellers have previously set up camp on the site, close to the Leeds Liverpool Canal, which is owned by Stirling Investments. And the plans received a generally favourable reaction when a consultation was staged at Norden High last month.

Planning agent Steve Gamble said it would be mainly three-bedroom houses, with some two and four-bedroom homes.

He added: “This site presents a good opportunity to re-invigorate an existing brown field site and contribute towards the need for new housing.”

Speaking after the consultation, Cllr Clare Cleary, who represents Rishton and is a cabinet member for housing and regeneration, said: “Almost everyone who has seen the plans thought they were good and it seems to have allayed a few fears about what will be built there.”

Cllr Ken Moss welcomed a pricing structure which would allow around 90 per cent of working couples in Rishton to afford the homes.
