A PROPOSAL has been made to introduce a residents-only parking permit scheme in Clayton-le-Moors.

The permits would operate in five car areas in the town.

In a report to the county council, it is stated that residents and businesses living near to the Hare and Hounds junction had raised concerns about parking restrictions coming into force because of the Pennine Reach bus scheme.

The report said, in order to alleviate concerns, car parking permits could be provided in the area for residents and businesses affected by the proposed bus lane and associated parking restrictions.

Areas listed are Canal Street, Clayton Street, Frank Street and William Street (East and West side of the carriageway).

If the permits are introduced, it would cost residents £25 for a 12 month period, however, the council is suggesting they could be issued free for the first year.

The report said: “It’s proposed the permits would be offered to those residents who are deemed eligible by allocating addresses to parking areas.

“Households will be able to apply for additional permits but these will only be granted if there are fewer applications for permits than there are parking spaces.”

William Street resident, Rachel Dooley, 40, said: “I think you need to be able to park on your own street – especially if you have small children like me.

“When I return home from shopping I have plenty of bags to carry and I have a one-year-old son so I need to be able to park near my house.

“People who work in the factory opposite usually park on the street in the evenings as well as those who go to the shops, so it is quite a busy area.

“I think this will be good for us and to me it makes sense to have a permit around here.”

The issue is set to be discussed at a forthcoming full county council meeting.
