CLASSROOMS at a Hyndburn school have been officially reopened in a special ceremony led by Rt Rev Philip North, the Bishop of Burnley.

The £60,000 project saw four classrooms at St Paul’s CE Primary School in Oswaldtwistle transformed over the summer, with the work concluding in the first two weeks of the new term.

Workmen were called in after damp was discovered in the walls which were then refurbished and redecorated to give the rooms a more modern feel.

The school successfully bid for the funds from the Diocese of Blackburn last year and the classrooms were officially opened by the bishop yesterday.

Acting headteacher Alison Barron said: “It was a wonderful event and the bishop was very impressed with how the children took part in the service and their singing.

“The classrooms look great and all of the children love them.

“There was no disruption during the work when the school came back as only small jobs needed to be finished by that point.

“It was great to get the funding from the diocese for this project. The bishop also blessed our worship table in the school.”

The classrooms that have been renovated are reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 4.

The school is looking to join forces with a local artist to create some artwork to go on display in the playground.

Pupils will create the work which will then be reproduced and be ready for display next year.

Since the start of the new term the school has seen a change in leadership with Mrs Barron joining for the academic year.

She is on secondment from Christ Church Charnock Richard CE Primary School and was acting headteacher at St Mary’s RC Primary School in Langho last year.

The school’s governors are expected to advertise for a full-time headteacher in the coming months.

Gina Smith has joined the school as a full-time deputy headteacher from St John with St Augustine of Canterbury RC Primary School in Burnley.

Mrs Barron said: “The school has seen a bit of change over the summer but it is moving in the right direction and has a positive future.”
