DELAYED bus shelter replacement work in Hyndburn, including one left uprooted in Oswaldtwistle town centre, has been branded ‘unsightly’ and ‘dangerous’.

Local councillor Peter Britcliffe is particularly concerned over the stop between the Black Dog and Rose and Crown pubs on Union Road which he fears is a risk to weekend revellers.

The shelter on the other side of the road has been fully replaced but the Accrington-bound shelter has been removed leaving an unfinished, uneven pavement.

Lancashire County Council, which is replacing the stops as part of its £40million Pennine Reach public transport scheme, said it was waiting for an electrical connection for the real-time information screen at the unfinished shelter.

The power link for the opposite one was already in place.

Tory county councillor for Oswaldtwistle Coun Britcliffe, who is also borough councillor for St Andrews ward, said: “The way the county is doing this scheme seems totally random.

“They have put up the new bus stop on one side of Union Road but the shelter between the Black Dog and Rose and Crown has been taken down, the paving left almost undone and cones put in place. It is an unsightly mess and dangerous to people going from pub to pub on Friday and Saturday nights.

“As you go down Union Road there are shelters removed and not replaced and unfinished ones.”

County public transport development manager Chris Anslow said: “A number of bus shelters due to be replaced currently remain in place while we complete an agreement with the advertising company which owns them and Hyndburn Borough Council. The shelter near the Rose and Crown pub is due to be replaced and we’re waiting for the utility company to provide an electricity supply to it.”
