RESIDENTS in Hyndburn still have time to say whether they are prepared to help pay other residents’ council tax.

The authority is facing a funding crisis and wants people to have their say on the future of council tax support before November 29.

Taxpayers are being offered three options — raise the minimum contribution paid by working-age benefit claimants from 20 per cent to 27 per cent, raise council tax for all Hyndburn residents by one per cent, or to make savings by cutting or reducing other services.

The first option, to raise the claimants’ contribution to 27 per cent, would hit 5,014 households in the borough, raising an annual band A bill for a working-age claimant by £56 for a single person and by £74 for a standard bill.

If everyone contributed an extra one per cent, an annual band A council tax bill would rise by just £1.19 a year for a single person and £1.58 a year for a standard bill.

None of the options would affect pension-age benefit claimants, which from April next year includes anyone over the age of 63.

To have your say, visit hyndburnbc.gov.uk/counciltaxsupport, e-mail enquiries@hyndburnbc.gov.uk or call 01254 388111.

The results will be published in December.
