THE benefits fraud investigation team at Hyndburn Council almost doubled its yearly sanctions target before its remit was transferred to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

In its monthly members’ information bulletin, the council told its staff the team had levied sanctions worth £302,800 against benefits claimants in the borough, compared to its 2014-15 target of £164,000.

A spokesman said: “The live cases the team were working on prior to transfer have also transferred to the DWP. Work will carry on making sure those intent on benefit fraud are caught and dealt with.”
