OSWALDTWISTLE'S first foodbank has marked its one-year anniversary - and it''s busier than ever.

The foodbank was originally opened for a trial period but stayed open because of high demand for help in the town.

Co-founder and chairperson Eve Gattei said around 1,500 families had been given emergency food packets to help them cope over the past 12 months.

She said: "I want to say it's a success but that's not a word I want to use. We have gone from strength to strength by helping people in need. We are not eradicating poverty but we are helping those who need it.

"We are only open from 1pm to 5pm every Monday but it has been busy, it's quite hectic. We are getting busier but we are more known so we have to take that into consideration."

The foodbank operated from the Harvey Street Community Centre but moved to Rhyddings Methodist Church in April after the three-month trial period ended.

Fifteen bins were distributed in primary schools, supermarkets, businesses and even GP surgeries to collect non-perishable foods which are then distributed to families and individuals by a large team of volunteers.

Residents are able to pick up food parcels with vouchers handed out by social services and support agencies such as Citizens Advice Bureau.

The foodbank was created by all 11 parishes in the community. Previously, eligible families were forced to travel to Blackburn or Accrington for aid.

Deliveries are now on offer during the mornings for those eligible.

Eve said: "We are quite fortunate that even though we have a lot of people living in poverty, we have a lot of people who can donate too. We get a lot of donations, whether it's food or money.

"And we have a lot of volunteers helping out which is good. There are a lot of good people out there willing to help."

Support and information service Help Direct helpers are also on hand to point people in the direction of any help they may need.

Launched in 2008, the service was commissioned by the county council and can help people in several areas, including health, mobility, finance, relationships, and employment and training.
