A HUNCOAT woman is using her creative talents to raise money for Parkinson’s UK.

Sandra Green, 66, who lives in Foxwood Chase, has the condition, but she has not let it stop her from painting and writing stories or poetry.

And now one of Sandra’s paintings has been chosen to feature in the charity’s 2015 Mervyn Peake calendar.

The Mervyn Peake Awards are a celebration of the talents of people with Parkinson's.

National charity Parkinson’s UK aims to encourage creativity in memory of the late Mervyn Peake, a much-admired artist and writer who suffered from Parkinson's.

The awards are supported by the Peake family and were established in 2002.

Every year poetry, drawings, and photographs by award winners are chosen to feature in the calendar, and Sandra’s painting of a robin coming down to land with his wings open has been picked for next year’s edition.

She said: “I was quite shocked as I didn’t know they’d chosen mine until they sent me a copy of the calendar. It was a lovely surprise.”

But her talents do not end there – Sandra has also written two children’s books, which will be sold locally to raise money for Parkinson’s UK.

Sandra was inspired to produce the books after writing stories for her grandchildren Samuel, five, James, nine, and Matthew, 11.

She approached a local printer and has had 100 copies of each book – The Tiger Who Could Whistle– and Jack the Tiger meets Henry the Elephant – printed.

The books will be sold at a ‘meet the author’ book launch at the Haworth Art Gallery on Saturday, October 25.

Sandra will be available between noon and 3pm, and tea, coffee, and cakes will be provided.

Sandra said: “I wrote them for one of my grandsons, Samuel.

“He decided he wanted the tiger to be called Jack.

“I’ve also done the illustrations and the book covers. I like painting, painting is one of my hobbies.

“The proceeds from the books will be going to Parkinson’s UK.

“This is my way of saying thank you to the local Parkinson’s Society in Accrington.”
