Hyndburn residents claim windfarm is interfering with TV signal

RESIDENTS who claim a windfarm is interferring with their TV signals say they fear permanently losing access to certain channels.

People in Sandy Lane Accrington and parts of Oswaldtwistle and Baxenden have been receiving visits from engineers after making complaints regarding the Hyndburn Wind Farm.

But Baxenden councillor Kath Pratt said residents were being told to turn their aerials away from Winter Hill’s transmitter towards Haslingden’s, resulting in a loss of channels.

She said: “The problem is Haslingden is not a full transmitter, it’s just a relay signal so residents could drop from 70 plus channels to having just 16.

“People are also being offered basic FreeSat, but this also only works on one set and most people have two televisions. I wouldn’t go for it if it was offered to me.

“It just isn’t right that people are going to lose what they already have. I also worry about elderly people who may be isolated who perhaps don’t realise it isn’t a problem with their set.”

Sandy Lane resident Frank Griggs said: “We’ve been told we can have a FreeSat box, but that it will only work on one TV. Right now we have two with Freeview boxes, which both record channels and we have more channels, so we’re being offered less than we already have.

“On FreeSat we can’t record or have two televisions.”

Another resident said: “The windfarm company sent an aerial company round to our house to turn my aerial, but we would lose 60 per cent of our channels.

“I told him no, it is unacceptable to lose so many channels when we have not had them all that long.

“All I am asking for is for the same as I have now. Is it too much to ask?”

EnergieKontour, the firm behind the wind farm, were unavailable for comment.

Haslingden is a low power relay transmitter designed to serve parts of rossendale and accrington which cannot receive a satisfactory signal from Winter Hill transmitter or Pendle Forest transmitter. It cannot carry all freeview channels nor be modified to do so and is only very low power as well. Winter Hill and all high power main stations should, where new windfarms are impeding reception, have their transmission power increased to a high level say 150-200kW to increase erp and fieldstrength to all viewers accross the transmitter service area so all viewers with windfarms in the way get good pictures and all channels with equal levels of signal strength and no problems.

I have freesat in two rooms, both with dual feed so I can record two channels at once. You just need a quad LNB on your dish. Simples!

EyUpLad you think people are made of money! these quad output minidish lnbs and additional cabling/connections cost a lot of money and many old people cannot afford this. Why not boost existing high power main tv/radio transmitters where windfarms are causing problems to reception so people can get a decent level of service on what they have? That would be better. No moved aerials or new aerials necessary.

To increase the power of Winter Hill would require extra electricity - perhaps as much as EnergieKontours windmills intermittently produce, so what is the point of having these things??

Or alternatively invest the £100,000 the Hyndburn Prospects Foundation are receiving from EnergieKontour for each of the next 25 years, into a solution that will get the people of Baxenden back to where they were before the Belthorn Moors were industrialised. Just a thought..

Interfering with T,V, signals? This is a hitherto unpublished benefit of Wind Farms! Build more I say if it prevents people from sitting in front of the idiot lamp all night. You never know they may start to read a book and educate themselves.

You have right to stop tv and radio reception to millions of people nor spoil it! you are ridiculous! I hope the turbines are removed or signals boosted to improve reception of freeview. Nobody should have to reposition their aerials to Haslingden or get Freesat. The company who put the turbines up deserves to fail BADLY.

Seus Vobiscum (sic)?

Read about Poynting vectors, from a book or other resource. If enough correspondents demand it, Ant and Gra will throw it at you. Won't we?

I live in Baxenden and my blood pressure has surely been affected by poor TV reception plus noises which I believe are caused by an illegal faulty suppressor caused to the wind farm. A lot of money was spent on providing both the TV Transmitters and personal TV receivers and to be offered an alternative of 2 BBC and two ITV channels isn't acceptable. Even though good reception isn't guaranteed I chose to pay the discounted price of £60 to have a Freesat dish & top box even though there's no guarantee that there'd be 100% decent reception. The first programme we wanted to watch on our Freesat was football on ITV4. There was NO signal received via the new "upgrade" Freesat - half hoping there'd be something to view on our original aerial we switched over and bingo - ITV4 channel was being received.
