DRUG items and 20 litres of alcohol were confiscated when a dozen children were taken off the streets.

Twelve young people were taken to safety as part of a night-time operation to keep young people safe in Hyndburn.

Special Constables and neighbourhood police officers joined forces with Lancashire County Council’s Trading Standards for the late night operation.

Hyndburn’s Family Intervention project, HARV domestic abuse service and Early Break also joined in patrols to identify young people who were believed to be vulnerable or at risk of harm.

Special Sergeant Charlotte Alldritt said: “Young people can be vulnerable due to many different circumstances and we are concerned that as a result they may be putting themselves at risk.”

Children taken to a place of safety included a 16-year-old boy found with drugs paraphernalia including a cannabis grinder and bong. A group of 14 and 15-year-olds was also found in Memorial Park with a large amount vodka and bottles of beer.

The action came as part of the CANsafe scheme — a joint initiative which involves agencies working together to address the negative impact underage drinking and anti-social behaviour can have on communities. Anyone with information or concerns about anti-social behaviour in their community can contact police on 101.
