LIBERAL Democrats leader Nick Clegg backed calls for an accident and emergency department to be returned to Burnley on his first visit to the town.

Mr Clegg, who also visited Nelson, spoke out after hearing local residents' views when he visited a cafe in Burnley's market hall yesterday.

Diane Flynn brought up a number of problems she has experienced since Burnley Gene-ral Hospital stopped accepting blue-light' emergencies in November 2007 as part of the NHS's Meeting Patients Needs reorganisation.

Speaking about the similarities between Burnley and his constituency in Sheffield, Mr Clegg said: "One thing that unites people is the concerns about local facilities - particularly the elderly - with five of your local post offices closing and the situation with A&E.

"It's shameful isn't it - and where's all this money going?

"People can't understand."

He added: "They will have to reverse this decision because it makes no sense - there should be an A&E in Burnley."

Mrs Flynn said: "We need an A&E in Burnley - it's got to come back. People are going to lose their lives - it's outrageous.

"Local people should have local amenities and especially emergency treatment."

Speaking about his visit to Burnley, Mr Clegg said: "I love it - I've spent a lot of time in the North West but I've never been here.

"Having listened to Gordon Birtwistle all the things that people are worrying about here are the locality of the nearest A&E, closure of the post offices, concern about local employment and people getting more value for money from the local council.

"Certainly up here in the North West there's a strong feeling that government in London are not listening to what people are saying."

After visiting Burnley, Mr Clegg went to the Visit Pendle centre at Boundary Mill before heading on to Nelson where he toured the site of the new Arts, Community and Enterprise (ACE) Centre.

Pendle Lib Dems are the worst. They are introducing Town Councils in Nelson and Colne at the expense of Council Taxpayers. The Town Councils are going to be useless as many of the candidates are existing sitting Borough Councillors!! Who is going to cover the cost for servicing these Town Councils?? TAXPAYER OF COURSE!! We don't even need to mention the PPC for the Lib Dems 50 people living in 1 house AND ONLY 1 COUNCIL TAX BILL.

its easy for the libs to oppose many policies as they know in reality they will never get into power so the situation will never occur whereby they will have to stand by their policies!!!

Actually the Lib Dems ARE in power in Burnley and Pendle, which is what the May elections are about.

Lib Dems are taking the power off the politicians and giving it back to the ordinary people of Burnley. Since taking control:

Burnley up from Cat 4 (poor) to Cat 1 (highly effective) at dealing with flytipping, which was our key election promise.

Area Action Plans changed to suit residents. Serious efforts to become a Council that listens.

Seventh biggest improvement in recycling rate in UK

Second biggest reduction in landfill use in UK

Litter-pickers re-introduced. Clean team created.

Nine PCSOs recruited and new anti-social behaviour unit.

£200,000 spent on alley gating.

Second clean-team in next year's budget.

Major initiatives to bring well-paid jobs to the town, particularly in advanced manufacturing.

I appreciate what you are saying and if you could just bring yourself to vote Conservative you would see even more of the positive changes you are looking for.

Look at the independent audit commission and you'll find the worst council in the country is Lib Dem and so are many others.

Conservative councils average leagues ahead.

Wonder how long this Leader will last...see he has visited Nelson probably to drum up support for the new prospective MP Afzal Anwar...the guy who cannot string 2 coherent sentences together. The Lib Dems will milk this local issue just as they did with the national one few years ago, that being the war in Iraq..its easy for the libs to oppose many policies as they know in reality they will never get into power so the situation will never occur whereby they will have to stand by their policies!!!
