Altham man died of anaphylactic shock in hospital cubicle

A TEARFUL widow told an inquest that hospital staff stood by and ‘did nothing’ as her husband died after suffering an acute anaphylactic reaction.

Gloria Haworth said her husband had a swollen neck and was struggling to breathe but only received medical intervention after he had collapsed in a hospital cubicle.

She told how, after being taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital by ambulance, John Haworth was left in one waiting room and then another and seen by nurses who said they did not know what was wrong.

“By this time he was struggling to breathe,” said Mrs Haworth. “I went to the receptionist and explained the situation and she said take a seat and the doctor will see you when it is your turn.”

She said when her husband eventually got to see a doctor he started asking him questions. I said he couldn’t breathe and the doctor literally threw an oxygen mask at me and said “try this” before he walked out,” said Mrs Haworth.

When the doctor returned he started asking questions again and Mrs Haworth explained that her husband couldn’t answer because he couldn’t breathe and was suffering a panic attack.

“The doctor said he couldn’t examine John until he had calmed down and he left us again,” said Mrs Haworth.

“John couldn’t breathe and I ran out to get help.

“That was the last time I saw him alive.

“All the signs were there and nobody did anything about it.

“They did nothing.”

Mr Haworth, 58, of Ringwood Close, Altham West, was described as a fit and healthy man by his wife.

On March 5 this year, he and his wife had their evening meal at about 7.45pm, then watched TV.

Later he complained of a sore throat, and started vomiting. He was taken to accident and emergency by ambulance at 1.53 am and was pronounced dead at 3.21am.

Dr Immanuel Ajawan said after first seeing Mr Haworth he left the cubicle twice, once to get his stethoscope and the second time to get some adrenalin, standard treatment for anaphylactic shock.

Coroner Michael Singleton recorded a narrative verdict which reflected the sequence of events.

The cause of the reaction could not be found by a post mortem examination.

After the hearing, Lynn Wissett, deputy chief execu-tive at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, expressed condolences to the family and offered to meet them to talk through the case, adding: “I would also emphasise that the coroner stated that the type of anaphylactic reaction in this case was unusual and there was no criticism of the trust within the coroner’s narrat-ive verdict.

“It was made clear during the inquest into Mr Hawo-rth’s death that appropriate actions were taken by our doctors and nurses during the treatment of Mr Haworth.”

After the hearing, Mrs Haworth said she had been advised by her solicitor not to comment at this stage.

How many more have to die at The RoyHELL before someone sorts it out!
All it is is a Teaching death trap, someone will sort the RoyHELL out but it will be far to late,I just hope that I`m no one of the statistics.
My thoughts go out to the family..

One saturday evening I took a close relative to the hospital who was suffering from strong chest pains even after taking her heart medication and angina spray. The Doctor who saw her was ever so rude and obnoxious.

Some Doctors really feel they have the power over life and death.

There are many causes for a swollen neck and the doctor eventually went for the right treatment , unfortunately some people are to quick to call the medical staff / nurses.

Although this is a tragic case I must disagree with the general care given at this hospital. Recently my grandmother had a stroke and was rushed by ambulance to the hospital. The staff were fantastic from the second we got there until the day we left. I sat with my gran in the resuscitation room whilst the doctors and nurses rushed around and truely saved her life. Never once did I feel the need to question what they were doing and when they got chance they updated me on what was happening. I cant thank them enough and would have no fear in returning if needs must.

This is a terrible thing to happen and the staff will feel bad about it but the Paramedic should have given adrenaline enroute to hospital if suspected Anaphylactic shock

Just had a similar bad experience at the RoyHell,a 91 year old pensioner who had a head injury due to a fall was taken into A&E ay 6.15pm. made to sit in the cold draughty waiting room (as the doors where kept open by the cig smoking fraternity)till 1.00am when his wound was sventually seen to and then made to wait till 4.00am to get a ambulance home as they said he is now alright.
I bet the Angels running that collection of huts are pleased to know the old lad is now dead and no longer a hindrence.

if what this lady and other people have said is true. then the doctor and nurses concerned should be struck off and charged with murder by neglect. it seems too many so called health professionals spend too much time preaching to everybody. perhaps they need to remember what they became doctors and nurses for!!!! if they wish to force their views/advice on people then they should stand for election. their arrogance is becoming overbearing.

Before you all go blaming the nurses , dont forget they are under orders and have to do as they are told by faceless managers , most A and Es have to have pts seen and out within 4 hrs , this was brought in by the government and if the doors were continually open due to smokers then security should have dealt with it as all the nurses get is abuse / threats and they do not force their views on anyone but they are forced by management to give health advice even though nurses like a fag and a drink as much as the next person but after all they are only doing their job.
As for the old guy that died it is sad but he probably died from an unrelated cause.
