A FAIRYTALE honeymoon turned into a nightmare after newlyweds were hit with a shock hospital bill of more than £36,000.

Burnley couple Ryan and Chloe Salmon jetted off to Florida on a two-week dream holiday to celebrate their wedding.

Things took a sudden turn when Ryan, 32, who has cystic fibrosis, ended up in hospital, struggling to breathe and suffering severe back and chest pains.

Ryan, who has had the condition all of his life, spent the last three days in Dr P Phillips Hospital in Orlando, needing oxygen, nebulisers and steroids, as well as respiratory care and help from specialised nurses.

Chloe, 25, said her husband’s condition had improved and was finally able to stand up yesterday.

However, the university student, who works part-time as a support worker for people with autism, said Ryan’s insurance was being disputed by the provider and she feared the couple may have to repay the full amount.

Chloe said Ryan had declared his condition to Yorkshire Bank and continued to pay a monthly fee for five years.

She said when Ryan contacted the bank, it said he had been sent a letter saying his condition was excluded, which the couple claim they never received.

Chloe said the bank had claimed it had sent a letter every year to update his insurance.

She said: “We had a perfect wedding on May 6 and flew out on our dream honeymoon.

“It was fantastic, we were having a great time seeing all the sights and going on the rides.

“However it got to Tuesday and Ryan was starting to suffer a bit with back pain, he wasn’t feeling well.

“We went back to the hotel at 6pm to help him sleep it off, but he was in excruciating pain.

“He tried to fight it off but when he woke up at 10pm he was so bad.

“He couldn’t breathe, he had severe pain, and he couldn’t cough to clear his throat because his back was so sore.

“We decided it was time to call an ambulance, and we dialled 911 and we went together.

“However when we got there we were separated. I was told to wait in the waiting room, on my own, in a different country.

“It was really scary, I didn’t know whether to call his parents, my parents, his friends. I didn’t want to worry anyone.”

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs, but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys and intestines.

Chloe said they were worried about paying the medical bills after going through difficulties with the Ryan’s insurance company.

She said: “We weren’t told we had to declare this every year, it’s a condition that won’t go away so why would we need to?

“I really feel like we’re going to have to end up paying for the money.

“We have been told we can go home before paying it all, but we will need to pay some before going.

“You go on holiday to have a nice romantic time, you don’t expect anything like this,” Chloe added.

A GoFundMe page was set up by Chloe and had received more than £4,000 by the first day.

Chloe said: “The response we’ve had has been overwhelming, everyone has been so helpful.

"Especially his sister Claire layfield, she has been a massive help back home."

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Bank said: “The customer has previously been in touch with the insurer and the matter has only now been brought to Yorkshire Bank’s attention.

"We are currently looking into the details of the case and will be in touch with the customer as quickly as possible.”
