A NEW batch of homes could be built on the site of a former quarry and ash tip.

Work to build 25 houses on the site off Rockcliffe Road, Bacup, has already been completed.

Now applicant Liberata has submitted a planning application to Rossendale Council for 26 more homes on the land, some of which will be for social housing.

Plans would see semi-detached houses built and the development would include new roads, parking, landscaping and amenities.

Covering an area of 2.5 hectares, the former quarry and ash tip stood abandoned for 20 years, prior to the first phase of residential development a few years ago.

These houses have now been built and the latest application marks the second phase of the project.

The site lies on the former boundary of the Bacup Station and goods station for the former cotton mills.

Natalie Sarabia-Johnston, head of architecture at Liberata said the plans would provide ‘much needed’ housing for the area.

She said: “The application relates to an old quarry site on land just off Rockcliffe Road in Bacup.

“So far, 25 homes have been built as part of the scheme and these plans are for another 26 houses on the site.

“The area in question has some fantastic views and this is great land for housing stock for Together Housing.

“This a good site and housing in the area is much-needed.”

Liberata said in planning documents: “The site is being developed with Barnfield Homes for Together Housing.

“This is the second phase on the site and is dependant on funding to support the development of the site.”

“We are looking for full planning consent with no pre-commencement conditions as the finding requires the project to start on site in March 2018, so the team has worked closely with the planning team at the council to ensure we provide the correct information to achieve this.”
