MORE needs to be done to retain nursing workforces, a nursing and midwifery regulator has claimed.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) backed a report from the Health Committee that recognises the 'unacceptable pressures' on nurses.

They have called for action for something to be done to address the problem.

NMC chief executive and registrar, Jackie Smith said: “Today’s report from the Health Committee recognises the “unacceptable pressures” on nurses and the call for action at pace."

It comes as NHS figures show thousands of vacancies for registered nursing and midwifery posts are not being filled.

Statistics, for the quarter to the end of September 2017, show that 5,245 vacant NHS nurse and midwifery posts were advertised in the North West.

However, just 445 of the posts were filled leaving a massive shortfall.
