COLD weather brings an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, health chiefs have warned.

NHS bosses in Lancashire have reminded people to look after themselves and others during the winter.

The message is particularly aimed at those with long-term condition such as diabetes, who are more vulnerable to becoming ill in the colder months.

Dr Kieran Murphy, medical director at NHS England (Lancashire and South Cumbria), said: “It’s surprising how quickly something like a cough or cold can turn into a serious health condition, especially for people who are vulnerable to becoming ill over the winter months.

“If you’re in an at-risk group, it’s really important to have your flu jab. Anyone in this group is more likely to potentially serious complications from flu and the vaccine offers the best protection.”

Last winter there were 400,000 additional A&E attendances in England, bringing the total to more than 7.5 million.
