CALLS have been made to look into care for newborns after a hospital trust was labelled ‘in the red’.

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust was one of 21 organisations, which received the lowest rating in the ‘traffic light’ system for their perinatal mortality rates.

The rating means they have a mortality rate which is more than 10 per cent greater than the national average.

Sir Bill Taylor, chair of Healthwatch for Blackburn with Darwen, said: “I will be taking it up with our professional staff at Healthwatch.

“We need to make sure our babies & especially their Mums get the best possible start in life.

“I look forward to what these top line discussions push forward, learning from the past to improve the future.”

The report was conducted by the MBRRACE-UK.
