PEOPLE interested in the implications of the largest shake-up of health and social care in Lancashire for a generation are being urged to attend a public meeting.

Campaigners from Healthwatch Blackburn with Darwen are behind a review for the county’s sustainability and transformation programme (STP), later this month.

The summit, at Blackburn Central Library, offers a chance for patients and their families to examine the future direction of the twin services.

Critics have previously questioned a ‘lack of detail’ over the STP process, which has been ongoing for 18 months, fearing it is being used as a smokescreen for future NHS cuts.

Andy Griffiths’ the Healthwatch group’s chief officer, said: “Health and social care services are under increasing pressure and the STP means potentially significant changes to the services available for the residents of Blackburn with Darwen.

“This public meeting is an opportunity for the public to get involved, find out more and ask questions to decision makers.”

The programme for Lancashire also incorporates neighbouring South Cumbria and will also be expected to deliver a five-year ‘forward view’ for the health service.

Sir Bill Taylor, the group’s chairman, added: “Our NHS, constitutionally, belongs to us all as citizens.

“This is a great opportunity for local citizens, patients and their families to come along, listen to the senior health and care leaders about their challenges, intentions and ask them questions about things that are important to us all.”

Those wanting to attend the public meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 29, are being asked to contact the Healthwatch office on 01254 296080 or e-mail info@healthwatchbwd.co.uk
