A LEADING health campaigner has been appointed to the board of East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Mike Wedgeworth, currently chairman of Healthwatch Lancashire, will be joining the trust as an associate non-executive director.

The former chief executive of Hyndburn Council and Blackburn College chairman has been a senior public figure for nearly 40 years in East Lancashire.

Mr Wedgeworth, who lives in Whalley, is currently also an assistant priest and canon at Blackburn Cathedral.

Prof Eileen Fairhurst, hospitals trust board chairman, said: “Mike brings extensive knowledge and a wealth of leadership experience that we can benefit from as the trust responds to the significant clinical, operational and financial challenges facing the NHS.”

Mr Wedgeworth, given an MBE for service to further education in 2010, added: “I am thrilled and enthusiastic about joining the board of directors at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and look forward to starting my role.

“I am delighted to have this opportunity to help the trust enhance its role in providing high-quality care to the people of East Lancashire.”

He will be entitled to remuneration of £6,157, in line with the general agreement for non-executive directors.
