More than 1,500 delegates from around the world watched as Rajan Mohan and Ravi Goyal performed a total hip replacement and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction from the theatres at Burnley General Hospital.

That same day, in the same hall, orthopaedic surgery from Munich, a knee operation from Delhi and a hip procedure from Adelaide were also broadcast for the international visitors.

These were just some of the 53 live surgeries, conducted by 45 surgeons, from 29 centres in 12 different countries.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Mohan, said: “We are extremely honoured that the trust has been given this opportunity.

“It is a real testament to the work of the teams here that we have been recognised as an example of good practice and excellence that can be shared across the world. The surgery was very interactive with participants from across the world watching, asking questions and learning from us.”

Mr Goyal said: “It is a very rare opportunity for the trust to be asked to do something like this.

“We have been told from colleagues attending the congress in India that the feedback was excellent so we are very proud of the surgery that we do here in East Lancashire. We were the only NHS trust to take part.”

Makaram Srinvasan, an orthopaedic consultant, had arranged for the trust to take part in the congress.

Back in autumn 2013 the day-case theatres at Burnley General was given a significant overhaul by the trust.

Fifteen thousand plus visitors attended the orthopaedic conference in the Indian capital, which took place over four days.

Sixty-four clinical fellowships, ranging from two weeks to one months, for postings in India, the UK, USA, Australia and Europe, were handed out as part of the gathering.
