EXERCISE classes which were set up for women with breast cancer are set to be extended following a successful trial.

The Macmillan ‘Move More’ programme has been well attended since launching in Blackburn in January, and will now also be offered in Clitheroe from April 20.

The charity works closely with Blackburn and East Lancashire Breast Care Support Group, and together they identified the group would benefit from being more active.

Six pilot activity sessions, specifically for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer, were staged at St Silas Parish Centre in Blackburn, and will now be held every Monday evening from 7pm.

The sessions offer several different activities such as tai chi, pilates and gentle exercise circuits.

Ruth Loft, the support group’s secretary, who was diagnosed with breast cancer 20 years ago, said: “The classes have been really popular and we want to tell everyone about it.

“Cancer and all the treatments you go through can make you feel very isolated and physically weak, and these classes help people get back to health, especially after something like chemotherapy.

“The sessions provide an excellent variety of exercises and at everyone’s own pace.”

Six sessions of tai chi are now also being run, in partnership with the Ribble Valley Breast Friends Group, at Grindleton Pavillion in Clitheroe, starting on Monday, April 20.

Beth Sutcliffe, of Macmillan, said: “We’ve had about 12 people coming to the sessions in Blackburn, which is is really good to see. Exercise is particularly important for people recovering from cancer, and is also beneficial in terms of prevention.”
