EAST Lancashire’s hospitals had to cancel 29 non-urgent operations in the first full week of January.
The Royal Blackburn and Burnley General hospitals have been under severe pressure this winter, due to high numbers of patients and the difficulties in discharging patients into community or social care.

NHS statistics for the same week showed there were 72 delayed discharges of care, which is known as ‘bed blocking’, which means the beds are not available for new patients. In 2013/14, the weekly average of non-urgent cancellations by the trust was 19.
