POLICE are appealing for information after two women - one aged in her 80s - had their handbags snatched.

The first incident happened between 9.30am and 10.10am this morning when a 28-year-old woman got off a bus on Whalley New Road, Blackburn.

As she walked along Plane Street, she was approached from behind by two men. One of the men pushed her causing her to stumble before he grabbed her handbag from her arm. Both men then made off towards Maple Street.

Both offenders were described as Asian men. One was aged in his 30s, was smartly dressed and was wearing a dark anorak and baseball hat with a peak.

The second incident happened between 1pm and 1.30pm this afternoon when an 81-year-old woman was on her way home from the local shop.

As she walked along a back street off Whalley New Road, Blackburn, a man snatched her blue holdall before running off. The man was described as white and was scruffy with ginger hair. He was wearing a green, baggy t-shirt.

The women were not injured but were left extremely shaken by the ordeal.

Police say that the two incidents are not being connected at this stage but are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Constable Andy Bleasdale said: "We are treating these incidents extremely seriously and I urge anyone with information about either offenders or who saw anything suspicious to contact us.

"Whilst this type of crime is rare in East Lancashire, we are aware that there have been two similar incidents in the same area today and we would like to remind members of the public to be extra vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police.

"I would always advise you to try to keep valuables such as mobile phones out of sight and carry your handbag close to your body making sure it is zipped up with the flap against your body.

"Try to carry your purse and keys in your coat pocket and don't carry large amounts of cash. Never leave your purse or wallet on top of your shopping or in a pram. If you suspects you are being followed, cross the road and head towards a busier place where you can ask for help or contact the police."

Anyone with information about the two incidents is asked to contact police on 0845 1 25 35 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
