A DARWEN rock band is encouraging young people to vote on May 6.

Outsider teamed up with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council to create a two-minute film for the general and borough elections.

The John Lennon Songwriting Contest-winning band penned the song Don’t Waste The Day to encourage more youngsters to vote on May 6.

The video has been launched on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to connect with the section of voters who are traditionally hardest to attract on polling day.

The video features a day in the life of a young person in the borough, and ends with him visiting the polling station.

Danny Jones, from Outsider, said: “A lot of young people don’t think about voting. I know I didn’t when I was younger.

“But hopefully this will make them aware that they can actually do something to make a difference.

“Don’t just talk about stuff that’s going on and moan about it, get out there and do something about it.”

Graham Burgess, chief executive of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “The borough has a high proportion of young people so we wanted to come up with innovative ways to reach out to them and encourage them to vote.

“Most young people engage with social media such as YouTube so we thought it would be a perfect format for us to get our messages out.”
