Barbara has lived in the Bishop Auckland constituency for most of her life; she was brought up in West Auckland and went to Bishop Barrington Comprehensive School. She swam for Bishop Auckland for most of her teenage years and her first child was born in Bishop Auckland Hospital. She now lives in Barnard Castle. Barbara has a degree in Sociology, a post graduate diploma in criminology and a MBA. She joined the Prison Service in 1985 and over a twenty year period successfully managed a variety of challenging roles locally regionally and nationally. Elected as a district councillor at Teesdale District Council in 2007 then as a County Councillor at Durham County Council in 2008 where she is now representing the Barnard Castle West Ward.
