11:01am Friday 19th August 2011 in A level results
By Nafeesa Shan, Reporter
BRAVE students from Blackburn College were thrust into the media spotlight when they opened their results live on Radio One yesterday.
Reporter Duncan Crawford, from Radio One Newsbeat, captured the emotion of the occasion as he interviewed students whilst they opened their results live on air.
Student Charlotte Wilkinson, who got 3As, an A* and a B, said: “It was very nerve racking when a camera man appeared at my shoulder as I opened my results but I got better grades than I expected so I just screamed with delight.”
Some students also appeared on BBC Northwest Tonight’s after reporter Dave Guest captured students receiving their results at the college campus.
And another group of students from the college was invited to Rock FM’s studio in Preston to open results live on the station’s breakfast show.
Lorna Temple, from Blackburn, achieved three A*s and a B in physics, maths, spanish, an extended project and an AS in Further Maths to secure her place to study Astro-physics at University College London for a four-year Masters degree.
Charlotte Wilkinson, 18, from Tosside, gained four A*s and an A in English Language, English Literature, Media, Psychology and Linguistics.
She will be studying Linguistics at University College London.
Haneefa Desai gained an A* in media, As in geography and sociology and a B in history.
Afifa Mulla gained an A* in RE, and As in psychology, and business studies and a B in accounting.
Callum Moseley gained A* in physics A* and Bs in biology, chemistry and computing.
Meanwhile a Blackburn College student who was forced to sit her exams at home after surgery has secured top grades.
Haneefa Desai, 17, from Blackburn, has been plagued with serious stomach problems which resulted in surgery during the exam period.
Although forced to sit her A-levels at home she was left thrilled yesterday when she open her results.
She gained an A* in Media Studies and As in geography and sociology.
Budding architect Haneefa, of Ridal Road, said: “It’s been a difficult couple of years and there have been times when I felt overwhelmed and uneasy trying to live a normal life whilst battling all these health problems.
“But thankfully my grades haven’t suffered and I owe a lot to the staff at the college for helping me through it.
“Everyone has been really supportive and it’s thanks to them that I can now look forward to a career at university.”
Haneefa has chosen not to apply for university this year because of her ongoing health issues.
But now after making the grade on results day, she plans to apply to study architecture at Manchester in 12 months’ time.
She added: “I’m going to stay on at Blackburn College and do a BTEC Level 3 course in Art.
"Then hopefully I’d like to go to Manchester to study architecture next year.”
Ian Clinton, principal for Blackburn College, said: “We are absolutely delighted with our 99 per cent pass rate – this is an outstanding achievement by all the staff and students in the college Sixth Form.
“I want to congratulate everyone for all their hard work over the past year – these results are once again exceptional and exactly what we deserve.
“While a lot of the focus has been on A Levels it is worth pointing out that vocational students have also excelled, especially in courses on childhood studies, sport, creative arts and construction. "Many of the students are going off to university, some are going straight in to employment and others to start apprenticeships.
“With results like these the future of the College is looking brighter than ever. "We want to thank everybody.”
Sir Bill Taylor, chair of governors at Blackburn College, said: “Once again our exceptional results highlight Blackburn College as an outstanding place to study.
“Year-on-year we constantly deliver excellent grades and pass rates – I’m really proud of everything we have achieved.”
