Blackburn schoolboy is 10th in the world for maths skills

Maths whizz Filip Szary. Maths whizz Filip Szary.

A TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Blackburn boy has come 10th in the world for his maths skills.

Filip Szary, a pupil at St Bede’s High School, correctly answered 106 mental arithmetic questions in 60 seconds as part of a World Maths Day Championship.

In total, more than two million students from schools across the globe took part in the online competition, with children from India taking the top two spots.

Filip, of Fielding Crescent, said: “It was almost impossible to do. They were firing all sorts of questions at me, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and some had a combination of all those sums. I’m pleased I got a good score, and next year my aim is to become world number one.”

Mum Magda Barszezewska said: “We’re very proud of Filip because we know how hard he’s worked practicing for this event.

“He’s spent every day doing sums.

“He’s a very clever boy and also does well with French, science, and geography, and eventually he wants to learn about the cosmos, and follow in the steps of Dr Brian Cox.”
