DARWEN’S biggest employers are backing the town’s MP in his bid to find jobs for 100 people in 100 days.
Crown Paints, metal fabricators WEC and clothing manufacturer DHJ Weisters have all signed up to take part in Jake Berry’s project, which launches next week.
WEC takes on 10 apprentices every year, and has promised to continue that to help Mr Berry with his campaign.
Marketing manager Jean Dziki said: “Apprenticeships are a big thing for us. We have about 50 working here already.
“We make sure our apprentices learn properly with big projects, like the tower dome and the Spitfire.
“It is good that Jake is trying to push apprenticeships as a lot of firms don’t take on a lot of apprentices at one time.”
Mr Berry said: “Unemployment and youth unemployment is a scar on people’s lives and it is important we take action now.
“We have to ensure young people have a chance at getting good jobs.
“It’s important we don’t focus on the ‘traditional’ apprentices like carpentry and plumbing. There needs to be opportunities in other areas, like computing and retail.”
The scheme will focus primarily on people under 24 and looking for work, but it is open to anybody.
Mr Berry added: “This will only be a success if people get behind the idea.
“Many businesses are keen to give young people a chance but are concerned at the lack of skills.
"Through this project, we can increase employment and skill levels.
“That, as well as the £1,500 Government grant on offer to firms that take on apprentices, should encourage peo-ple to get on board.”
Mr Berry said it was not just about the 100 days, it had to have a lasting legacy.
“Lots of firms who may not be able to offer apprenticeships now have said they are intending to do so in the future.
“The long-term legacy I want to create is that employing apprentices and employing local people becomes part of employers’ psyche.”

It's great news and well done Jake Berry for even taking an interest.
Apprentices aside, Crown Paints have used agencies for years for temporary workers. And many of those workers don't stand a chance because some of the permanent staff undermine them at every opportunity. Crown is a good employer but they need to get rid of some of the idle deadwood that make the temps life hard work by not talking to them, not helping them and even going so far as to sabotage their work so that temps in general are looked down on so that they can big themselves up. Some even resent the temps 'stealing' their overtime.
Yeah, Uncle Fester, I'm on about you, ya bald-headed d!ck. And that other chump on your shift, N**** with the petty "that's my truck, boo-hoo" everyday. And the poisoned dwarf who needs to learn to speak English properly so that people know what they're doing.

Hence, all the workers there had a choice, redundancy, transfer of employment to a local company, or redeployment in Darwen.
If the agency temps. (of which there are very few at the moment) had been offered permanent employment 6 months ago, then the loyal employees wishing to remain with the company would have lost their jobs.
As for your scathing attack on particular persons, I am aware of the incident you speak of.
I am also aware of the outcome and the feelings of the (vast majority) of right thinking and decent workers who were appalled by it.
This happened a number of years ago.
These days overtime is at a premium, with options open to management during peak periods which includes a pro-active approach by the management, unions and the workforce to amend shift patterns.
As a somewhat seasonal employer, some requirement for temporary employment, will however always exist.
Crown Paints has a zero tolerance approach to intimidating behaviour, as a worker recently discovered to their cost.
