Ribble Valley pupil, 15, found with cannabis in school

A 15-YEAR-old boy who took cannabis into school has been given a three month referral order.

The youngster pleaded guilty at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court to possessing a quantity of the Class B drug.

Police were called to Bowland High School, Sawley Road, Grindleton, on November 10 around 11.35am when he was found to have cannabis in his possession.

He was issued with a court summons and was dealt with by magistrates.

The boy pleaded guilty to having a personal amount in his possession.

He was also ordered to pay £80 in costs.

Head teacher of Bowland High School said that illegal drug possession was taken ‘extremely seriously’.

The head, Stephen Cox, reassured parents that the incident was ‘very rare’ and is committed to teaching its pupils about the dangers of taking illegal substances.

After the hearing Mr Cox said: “We take the possession of illegal drugs at Bowland extremely seriously.

The school has a robust policy on the possession of illegal drugs.

The individual concerned and the parents understand the gravity of what has happened.

“Whilst this is a very rare incident at Bowland, there is no doubt that the use of illegal drugs by some teenagers throughout the Ribble Valley is more widespread than we would want to believe.

“Like all other schools in the Ribble Valley we endeavour to educate our pupils on the dangers and consequences of using both legal and illegal drugs.

“We have an excellent relationship with the police and their involvement in this incident, hopefully, spells out to other young people how seriously we view such behaviour.”

It IS harsh. But it sends the right message out and might help preserve standards at the school.

Thought this was a 'Proper School' , so there are problems even in the 'posh'schools then.
No one can condone this kind of behavior. The future doesn't look rosy for this pupil , I hipe He realises His mistake.

Too Harsh!!!! I'm 55 years old and I remember one or two friends at my school having the odd piece of weed! I don't smoke it myself, but they didn't grow up any worse off for it. Its been around forever so why make it such a big deal (should have given him the cane and sent him on his way!)

A btter version of this story:

A 15-YEAR-OLD boy found in possession of cannabis at his Ribble Valley school claimed in court that most people his age he came into contact with in the Clitheroe area were users of the drug.

Blackburn magistrates heard the Bowland High School pupil told police he had smoked some cannabis before he attended school that day. He admitted using about £40-worth of the drug a week and said he didn’t think it was wrong and he would continue to smoke cannabis.

The boy, who lives in Clitheroe but cannot be named because of his age, admitted possessing cannabis. He was made subject to a referall order for three months.

Miss Julie Reddish (prosecuting) said police were called in by headteacher Stephen Cox after the boy was found with the drug on school premises.

Mr Ian Huggan (defending) said the boy was not unintelligent and put forward his own reasoned argument about smoking cannabis.

“He says a lot of his peers use cannabis, in fact it seems the majority of the people his age he bumps into in the Clitheroe area are users,” said Mr Huggan.

“He says he sometimes has issues with depression and cannabis helps with that.”

Mr Huggan said the boy was described by his parents as a “loving and caring” son.

In the wake of the case Mr Stephen Cox, headteacher at Bowland High School, issued the following statement: “We take the possession of illegal drugs at Bowland extremely seriously.

“The school has a robust policy on the possession of illegal drugs. The individual concerned and his parents understand the gravity of what has happened. Note:The school does not condone mind expansion in any form and would rather pupils to concentrate on ticking pre-defined boxes or short paragraphs based on narrow fields of revision.

We won't make the work or exam too difficult or interdisciplinary otherwise the teachers will struggle marking it - and we can't allow thinking outside of the box.

Or off your box either.

The corduroys - easy targets again, yet so often fruitful. We may expect that at least one of them will jump in soon; they're easily identifed as those who can't spell.

So most 15 yr olds in the area are weed smokers and thats ok then ?
Just because others are doing something , in this case illegal, everyone should try it ? Not really a good message to send to Our teenagers is it.
If a lot of them were stealing would We encourage that too ?

Agreed, he must have had a previous warning or caution for possession, or is there a separate offence of possession in an educational establishment ?

I agree the brain is still developing at such a young age, I would much prefer that Politicians used the advice of its Scientists but instead it sacked them for telling the truth, but fair play to this young man he argued his case, respects for that. Hopefully his future employers will make allowances for his now criminal record, Apple would be an ideal company for him to look at, Steve Jobs actively encouraged drug use :)
