Tuition fees to increase for Blackburn College university courses

AN East Lancashire college has announced it is putting up tuition fees from September.

Blackburn College has decided to raise university fees for new students from £1,285 to £3,290.

But bosses at the University Centre said the £2,005 increase would bring the centre, which hosts degree programmes on behalf of the universities in Lancaster, Glamorgan and Huddersfield, in line with other similar institutions across the country.

They say that they will be offering bursaries of up to £1,000 to students to help with costs.

Blackburn College Student Union president Qasim Asad said the decision could affect people choosing to study at the University Centre.

Qasim said: “I would imagine a lot of students will be disappointed by the decision. One of the unique selling points of the University Centre is that there are low fees, but we are due to hold talks and have been told the centre will be offering bursaries to students.”

Vice principle Yana Williams said the additional funding would enable the college to offer more one-to-one support to students.

She said: “The decision was discussed last academic year and we have taken the decision to put them up from September.”

Current degree students will not be affected.

We now understand what the quote 'additional revenue streams' actually means, (Helen Mather, yesterdays Telegraph). This will cripple UCBC. The ability to educate local people and retain their skills in the area will be severely depleted.
It may bring the University Centre into line with other institutions in terms of charging students the same as every other University but UCBC is NOT a university. Compare the basic functions of UCLAN and UCBC and there are significant differences. Blackburn College does not offer the facilities that UCLAN has. By Ian Clintons own admission the University Centre is not up to standard, how can the college justify charging so much more when it gives much less than other institutions in terms of univerity life experience?
As a former student of UCLAN and current at UCBC I could only recommend UCBC on the strength of the teaching, it is excellent. However it was the low tuition fees that attracted me to UCBC in the first place. Given the choice now I'd take UCLAN because of the surrounding infrastructure that allows students to flourish.
I hope that UCBC does not fail, but the introduction of 'top-up' fees could start the ball rolling.
Very bad move Ian Clinton.
I also would have removed the posters advertising 'no top-up fees' before making this announcement.
Especially the ones near your office

It may "bring you in line..." but do other parts of the country have a low wages as Blackburn with Darwen?
U can not see how getting in line wuth others helps anyone other than teh College income and senior satff, it does not help the residents of Blackburn with Darwen. If you wish to do that have a reduced fee to recognise teh support uyou have had from our Council and let residents pay fees more closely attuned to average earnings n the Borough!!
