Here we go! Darwen school to create allotments

STAFF, parents and residents near Holy Trinity Primary School, Darwen, have met to discuss a new project to create allotments in the school grounds.

Teachers decided to clear part of the grounds to allow members of the school community and residents to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

It is hoped that some of the produce will be used in school meals and in the school cookery club, and may even be sold.

Deputy head Jane Hollows said: “Our school is a creative partnership school, which means we try to encourage our children to think creatively.

“As part of this, we decided that would we would like to create allotments in the school grounds.

“We also wanted to get parents and local residents involved.”

Wonderful. Let's hope more schools take up this idea if Holy Trinity succeed. We need more people learning how to produce their own food and it's logical to start at a young age in an educational establishment.
