Electric shock sparks safety review at Padiham school

A SAFETY review will take place at a new super school in Padiham after a canteen worker received an electric shock.

Inspectors will study roller shutters in the cafe at the new £20 million Shuttleworth College, Burnley Road, after an incident on Thursday lunchtime.

The catering assistant involved, who has not been named, was not seriously hurt as a result of the incident.

But a team from the school’s site managers, Catalyst Lend Lease, will conduct a health and safety report on the equipment.

Martin Burgess, Shuttleworth’s headteacher, said: “A member of our catering staff received a small electric shock when she was operating shutters in the dining room on Thursday.

“She attended hospital for a precautionary check-up and we closed that serving hatch for the day.

“She has made a full recovery and was back at work the following day.

“Contractors immediately came into the school to deal with the problem and have given us a written assurance that the area is now safe.

“We will also carry out a full health and safety inspection of the area.”

The new building, catering for 1,050 pupils, was opened last September after former Gawthorpe High pupils had spent two years in temporary accommodation in nearby Kiddrow Lane.

A Health and Safety Executive spokesman confirmed that an investigation would be conducted by the county council, as the incident took place on school premises.
