A SPOKEN word competition is inviting schools from across Lancashire to consider how Commonwealth countries can work ‘towards a common future’.

Commonwealth Voices is open to all young people aged between 11 and 16 who attend a secondary school in Lancashire.

Supported by Lancashire County Council and Blackburn with Darwen Council,, the project encourages pupils to express themselves on global issues.

Schools must submit video entries of spoken word pieces on behalf of their pupils, who can enter as individuals or in groups of up to five members.

Six Commonwealth Voices finalists will have the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience at the Lancashire Civic Leaders’ Commonwealth Celebration Event, to be held on Wednesday 18 April.

The Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, the Rt Hon the Lord Shuttleworth, KG, KVCO, is leading Lancashire’s Commonwealth celebrations.

Lord Shuttleworth said: “It is a great honour to take a lead role in our county’s celebrations. The next few months will be a thrilling time with many events and occasions to look forward to.”

Secondary schools have until Friday 16 March to submit their pupils’ video entries to the Commonwealth Voices competition.
