A DARWEN out-of-school club has been told to improve its safeguarding policy after being rated ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted.

Staff at The Chill Zone Ltd, which is based at Avondale County School, have a ‘poor knowledge of how to respond to child protection concerns or allegations of abuse’, according to inspectors.

The Durham Road club, which was previously rated ‘good’ following an inspection in 2013, has been told to ensure staff have completed a disclosure and barring service check, ensure its safeguarding policy is in line with the local safeguarding children board and ensure at least one person on site has a paediatric first aid certificate.

Inspector Vickie Halliwell said checks had not be completed for one member of staff which compromises children’s safety.

She said: “Staff have a poor knowledge of how to respond to child protection concerns or allegations of abuse.

“This means they are unable to implement effective procedures to protect children.

“The written safeguarding policy is not in line with the Local Safeguarding Children Board.”

“There are times when the setting operates without a member of staff who has a current paediatric first-aid certificate.”

The club was unavailable for comment.
