A SCHOOLGIRL has reached the regional stages of a national poetry competition.
Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic College student Olivia Sutcliffe took part in the Poetry by Heart contest, initially having to learn and read a poem at the Ormerod Road school in front of an audience.

The Year 10 pupil was then selected to take part in the regional finals at Lancaster Library.
It was there that she had to recite three poems – a pre-1914 one, a post-1914 one and a First World War showcase.
“It was nerve-racking but I like speaking in front of people,” said Olivia, 14.
“The hardest part was learning the poems as I selected The Soldier by Rupert Brooke, Waking with Russell by Don Paterson and Proud Maisie by Sir Walter Scott and had to learn them all in three weeks.
“I had to talk in front of 30 people but once I started I was fine. I was told I had done well in the competition and was awarded a poetry book as a prize.”
