A GROUP of 11 students from Our Lady and St John’s Catholic College, in Blackburn, had advice from the best when they visited Cambridge University.

The students toured the famous colleges, including Corpus Christi and Kings, and then attended a lecture entitled The Subject Matters.

This was designed for Year 11 students and consisted of advice on choosing the right combinations of A-levels, what additional qualifications are available to boost applications to universities, such as Cambridge, and a question and answer session with current students on their experiences on applying and interviewing.

“In this session our pupils confidently – in front of the entire lecture theatre – asked their questions on joint honours degrees and career opportunities from physical and social sciences,” said Our Lady and St John’s teacher and trip organiser Amy Ni’Laoire.

“The trip increased their knowledge of what choices are available to them, the range of universities available and what they have to do to get a place at them.

“It raised their aspirations and showed what they can achieve.

“A large number of our students are more than capable of achieving the grades needed to attend a Russell Group university, which includes the likes of Cambridge, Liverpool, Sheffield and Bristol.

“In the journey to becoming an outstanding school, trips such as these show that OLSJ is committed to providing the best opportunities for our pupils and having an opening doors approach to our careers curriculum.”
