FOUR maths students from St Mary’s College recently took part in the North West regional heat of a schools maths competition, held at the University of Manchester.

The Senior Team Maths Challenge is jointly organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust and the Further Maths Support Programme and is a competition testing mathematical, communication and teamwork skill.

Students compete against teams from other schools and colleges from the North West, with 30 teams taking part.

Autumn Charnley, Zainulabedin Akuji , Ayesha Munshi and Shoyab Alli, took part in three rounds in the STMC.

St Mary’s maths teacher Mr Ibrahim said: “I wanted the students to develop their competitive spirit and thought the Senior Team Maths Challenge would be an ideal opportunity to demonstrate exactly that.

“The competition also gave the students the opportunity to work as part of a team, develop problem solving skills and learn to develop better strategies when tackling challenging problems.

“These are skills which are actively sought-after by universities and employers.”
