A BURNLEY ‘superschool’ which was put in special measures has been given a glowing report by inspectors.

Blessed Trinity RC High School was told it was providing inadequate levels of teaching in 2011, when it was placed in special measures.

But headteacher Richard Varey, who joined the Ormerod Road school around two years ago, said the hard work of the staff, pupils and parents was now paying off.

He said: “We have had a fantastic journey in the last two years and we have just got our best GCSE exam results ever.

“We are really pleased, but it is just a stepping stone.”

He put the school’s success down to raising students’ aspirations and improving behaviour. Mobile phones, jewellery and makeup are all banned.

A new curriculum designed to push high-ability students and to support those who need extra help has also been introduced.

And a focus on literacy sees pupils take a break from the timetable for an hour and 45 minutes each week so they can pick up a book and read for pleasure.

Colin Scott, lead Ofsted inspector, said in a report that most teaching was now good, although achievement in English was now outstanding.

He said: “Teachers have worked tirelessly to improve the quality of students’ learning. High standards are expected and this has had a positive impact on progress and achievement.

“Students are looked after well and behave courteously to others. They are developing into highly moral individuals who accept others from different backgrounds, sexualities or beliefs.

Mr Varey said the plan now was to strive for an outstanding rating.

He said: “I think we will be outstanding in two years if we continue with the rate of improvement. It is so fantastic to be part of it.”
