DARWEN stallholders are calling for a 25 per cent reduction in their rents to save the town's market.

Traders are urging Blackburn with Darwen Council to drop the rents in the three-day-market by a quarter until regeneration works in the town are completed.

They said that such a reduction would be a offer a huge incentive to stay in the market at a time when they were struggling to survive.

Due to the number of empty stalls traders said that many customers believe the market is closing down.

Council bosses responded by saying a range of measures were to be introduced in a bid to boost the market.

Clive Wilson, who has run six stalls on the market since it opened in the 1970s, has put the rent-reduction request in writing to the council.

He said: "We are asking them to be reduced until the regeneration works have been completed in Darwen.

"The houses that have been knocked down in Redearth and even those under the housing scheme in the Queen Street area have also effected our trade.

"We also want to know what is being done to fill the stalls in the market over the last 12 months because many of them are empty."

Terry Longden, markets manager for Blackburn with Darwen Council, said a meeting would be staged with traders on May 12 in Darwen Library Theatre to help them attract more customers.

He said: "A range of measures are to be introduced that are aimed at increasing the customer footfall through the market by improving the range of goods that are available to the customer.

"Independent business support is also being offering including free business training, mentoring and business planning.

"The overall business opportunity to both existing and new market traders is to be included in a special 'Business Opportunities on Darwen Market' pack which includes a range of new initiatives.

"The include rental concession for the sale of unique goods and a 'Trader Buddy' scheme offering a free weeks rent for a trader who introduces and sponsors a new trader who completes six months on the market.

"A revised letting policy is also being introduced that re-emphasises that the priority is to generate increased footfall through the market by supporting expansion and improvement of the overall offer to the customer. This includes quicker processes for the letting of stalls and 'casual' lets in the market hall/ lease side."

Do you know they spent £60K in Blackburn advertising the market stalls last year. When people approached them to rent stalls they were told there is not much point it is closing anyway.

So what was the point of wasting £ 60k

Of course, let the market run down completely and then the council will be able to justify allowing even more supermarket to be built, the planning committee will not have to deal with any objections, not that they ever take any notice, and one of them will even get their names on a plaque to say they opened it. Vanity all is vanity

Now is the test for our new "For Darwen" party to DO something for Darwen

Our new for darwen party has been part of Ruling Coalition for the last 12 months, they don't care about market stall holders they only care about their own businesses. What makes you think they will do something now. Melia came out with pie in the sky plans for Robin Bank, that he knows can never happen, He done that to win a few votes.Or are they part of the Independent Support being offeres

Why do they need to have consultants for goodness sake? All this "sales jargon is completely wasteful" I have been on sales courses and all they do is fill you with gimmicks. Have the meeting by all means, come along with some practical steps. Follow the ideas set out by "True Darrener" above and brighten the place up. When are we going to see some flowers in the Market Square? I see that some Blackburn Town Centre lamp posts have flower baskets - why can't we?
Some of the comments above are just negative and do not help the cause - they are just a "turn off" for anyone with a genuine interest. Now is the test for our new "For Darwen" party to DO something for Darwen - go for it Stuart!!

Surely the money would be better spent on reducing rents, advertising the markets - Better signs and ones that highlight FREE parking and scrap the proposed DISC PARKING scheme. how about some entertainment paid for by the Council as well. Couldn't the officers look at how other markets have diversified rather than waste thousands of pounds on oconsultants- yes and how about our newly elected councillors what have they got to say? or are were the elections only political Rhetoric - looks like the Council isn't listening again.......... roll on a Town Council for Darwen.

C'Mon

Councillors of Darwen.

Start backing our Market Traders.

Stand By them and help them get a reduction in their rents.

Lower rent will help our stall holders to stay and hopefully encourage new stall holders.

Start working together with these guys to build our market up.

There is no need for consultants and mentors.

Our traders have done fine without them in the past.

It's outlandish rents that are breaking the backs of our traders.

Good idea, spend money on consultants and mentors instead of reducing rents to encourage new tenants.

Terry Longden, I bet the meeting on 12th May goes down really well! You have no intention of generating REAL business into the markets, It's all rhetoric, you know the towns are in decline, better to admit it than prolong the deceit. Shame on you
