"SCRUFFY" second-hand Welsh phone boxes have been installed in a regeneration area of Darwen town centre.

A request was made in December to replace boxes, which were taken out of the Market Square last year while work was done in the area, with iconic red phone boxes.

But now two modern-style boxes on Market Street have been installed.

One has English signage and the other has Welsh and English writing.

Neither have phones in them.

Muriel Brown, from Ribble Avenue, Darwen, said: "It's lovely round here and then they go and put these scruffy things in.

"I'd rather they were the old fashioned type or at least new ones.

"There's not many Welsh folk around here!"

Rowen Hayes, 31, from the Hollins Grove area, said: "It's weird.

"They're definitely not right for here. I don't know why they didn't leave the originals in."

A BT engineer at the site said he was fitting the phones in the boxes on Wednesday and that they had "probably come off another site."

Emma Tennant, spokeperson for BT, said: "I can confirm plans are under way to complete the reinstallation of two modern-style payphone kiosks just off Market Square, as previously agreed with the local authority.

"It is normal practice for BT to reuse payphone materials where we can. We will ensure the kiosks are in tip top condition." Coun Dave Smith said: "They are really scruffy and unkempt.

"There is Welsh writing on them, so they are clearly second-hand from Wales.

"They are out of keeping and I would have thought that new boxes would have been installed in keeping with all the new works. Old-style red boxes would have been good."

Coun Paul Browne said: "To put second-hand phone boxes in an area of regeneration is atrocious.

"No wonder people are getting fed up with politics."

Adam Scott, strategic director of regeneration and environment, said: "One of the boxes is in Welsh.

"We are known for our welcome to visitors but this is ridiculous!

"We are contacting BT to ask for the telephone boxes to be improved."

Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration, said the phone boxes would be made appropriate for the conservation area.

He said: "We recognise there is a need to make them look presentable.

"The phone boxes that have been put in are not available new and command a high price."

My gatitude to Blitish Tele for providing us Romanian worker wid overnight lodger. The boxes are quite warm and keep out draft. We had hoped for large pay toilet like we stay in in Londin only 20 pences each night for six of us. We are hopin to work at BBC Aldridge Television licenses centre for three months so we can roughing it – wages not so good but better than Romania. Hope to send children to your new Academy otherwise known as tomato factory. thank your Mr Aldridge you good friend. Hoping to take Welsh classes..

Listen you Darreners you should be grateful for these Telephone Boxes and no you do`nt use them as homes. We away from your little world thought you still used Carrier Pigeons to send messages and still lived in CAVES and the local transport was still stagecoaches. As it is really the back of beyond and close to the Twilight Zone.

well i agree with the comment of 'Darreners wanted indendance from Blackburn, I did't know they wanted to be Welsh' the worst thing that ever happened to darwen is joining with blackburn. but what the heck is the point of regenerating darwen to actually making it look respectable and then goin to put shabby old phone box's in. if they couldnt afford to finish the job properly they should never of started this government is completely crap!!!! and i bet u that they try to shift the blame onto someone else

Red phone boxes cost a fortune... in the region of £5000. I'm sure there would be outrage if the council spent this on them. And it would be the Council because BT don't provide them anymore

Has anybody who wants a red phone box in Darwen actually tried to use one of late? There's a reason why they were largely decommissioned. They are tiny and the doors a really really heavy so older people and disabled people whould stuggle to use them

And as someone who lives near a phone box and regularly has to call BT to get the glass fixed because of the idiots who live round here who think its fun to smash them up I don't think its a good idea to give these yobs 72 glass panels to samsh instead of the usual 6.

I saw these being installed, and the van that these turned up on had 2 traditional red boxes on as well. Is it not the BT numpty's that have got it wrong?

Your article quote "Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said that the phone boxes will be made appropriate for the conservation area" - does that mean we will be having the old style red phone boxes or what does it mean - could we have a definite answer not a politicians answer please from the Council.

At least we might get some use out of them, better than the usual "hand-me-down" Christmas lights we normally get.

Darreners wanted indendance from Blackburn, I did't know they wanted to be Welsh.

Or is it a case of Darwen getting second hand goods as usual, including their Councillors

i thought with the idea with keeping up with the conservation area they would have replaced the phone boxes with the original red ones(refurbished of course).how many original phone boxes do we see now apart from in the front of some rich yankees front garden(which is probably where the original ones have gone)appparently they get a good price in u.s.a.
