Internet protest over ban on alcohol

A LIVE music lover has set up a Facebook protest against the alcohol ban at Darwen Music Festival this year.

Michael Maud, 26, from Blackburn, said the decision by the council to stop people taking alcohol, glass bottles and containers to fenced-off areas in the town centre was "political correctness gone mad and something needed to be done."

Anyone wanting an alcoholic drink during the festival will be able to have one inside a beer tent within the cordoned-off areas.

In the first three days of the group, called Ban the alcohol ban at DMF, being posted on Facebook, more than 250 members signed up.

Michael has attended the festival for the past two years and believes that the ban will kill the atmosphere and force people away.

He said: "When I read the story about the alcohol ban I thought that something needed to be done.

"In the years that I've been I've never noticed a problem.

"I don't see how banning alcohol will help - people who really want to drink all day and be rowdy will still do it.

"But it will mean that students and people who cannot afford inflated prices for drinks will not go. It will kill it and the organisers will struggle to get it together next year."

Michael said that he has no definite plans on what to do with the social networking site group.

He said: "I am waiting to see what happens. I wanted to create a forum where people can discuss the problem and come up with ideas about it."

The festival, now in its ninth year, will take place on May 25 and May 26.

Council bosses said they had taken the decision for health safety reasons and to create a safer environment in a bid to encourage families back to the festival.

i think that the ban for the alcohol at dmf should go ahead as there are loads of fight at the festival due to alcohol people should be aloud to enjoy music without being drunk or violent.

You're missing the point - there still will be drunk people, they can drink outside the 'exclusion zone'.

All this will do cause the pubs to be even fuller, meaning people get wound up in there, and the beer tents will be rammed with people.

Which will handily swell the coffers of the council...hmmmm...a coincidence I'm sure...

It's a music festival, not a beer festival. Unfortunately for most Darreners it's part of their genetic code to have a can of lager welded to their hand.

this is pathetic! ive been to every dmf and had a fantastic time its a chance for the town 2 get 2gether and have a good time. instead ther are now going to be massive queues 2 the bar people getting flustered and people generally having a crap time! as if the council havnt done enough with job evaluation!!

In what sense is stopping people bringing their own alcohol to a music event 'political correctness'??? It's not even as is alcohol is banned completely. Maybe the Council should set up an AA meeting outside the cordon for these people who can't cope without a drink for a couple of hours?

That's not the point; the whole idea of the festival is to have a free event that everyone can go to and have a good time. Families have been a big part of the festivals success in the past...young families especially don't always have much money and saw the festival as a low cost day out where they could relax and take a couple of drinks and food. Now, with a cordoned off drinking area there will be big queues, expensive beer and grumpy people who remember the times that Darwen Music Live was a chilled, family day out, and probably won't bother going again. Darwen - 0, Council - 1 good excuse to cancel Darwen Music Live permanently, and 1 huge group of disappointed people who didn't want to lose the only decent free music event left in Blackburn and Darwen. Shame.

The Main Stage has allways been cordoned off and you have had to pass through the security barrier.Austin Mill Hill, you are the one missing the point. The pubs have allways been full and the clubs are the same, this is the reason why there is another outside stage that will give the people the opportunity to see the bands that play in the pubs and clubs, this will go a long way to reducing the crush factor. The only area to be controlled is the main stage area and i support that idea. Unfortunatly it is the actions of the few that is affecting the many. I like a drink and i will have a drink if it means buying one at the beer tent i will but this is not stopping me going out and having a drink while i am roaming from venue to venue. Most people go from venue to venue and they do not let you in with your own Drink.
I think most of the comments about the drinking are pathetic, the council are not stopping you drinking they are controlling the drink taken on site. I have been to all Darwen Lives and it shows how much some people know as they call it Darwen Music Live and it has never been called by that name.
Broken bottles and cans on the floor mixed with **** heads puking and chaves throwing beer around has become a unwelcome part of the festival. I saw a man punch a lad last year because he tossed his can across the crowd and it hit his young son. The guy told him to calm down and he was told what to do so he punched him and most of the blokes aroung supported the guy.
This is why it needs to be controlled, its a shame that it has come to this but the main problems come from the same groups of people who are being complained about every week in the paper for getting **** at the weekend and causing grief around your homes.
You moan about it then yet condone it because it is Darwen Live. This is why the controlls are in place and are supported by the massive majority of Darwen Live bands and festival goers me included.
I go to most festivals and i can assure you Darwen live is the least controlled in the area.

Beatnick what you are saying is also full of incorrect facts in the 1st 2 years there was no barrier controls for this festival when it was located on the car park behined co-op funerals or when it was on the leisure center car park the reason for this is that it wasn't run by the council then it was organised by the memebers of Gone Beggin but the council have poked there noses in more and more over the years and have ruined what Gary Brown and Terry Walsh set out to do. It has also been called Darwen Music Live since its creation ive got the event staff t-shirt to prove it.

It is an offence to drink on the streets of the town centre, other than designated areas and pubs. Deal with it!! They are not stopping you drinking full stop, just making sure you drink in controlled areas. This way more families are likely to come and enjoy it rather than having the whole thing swamped by drunken youths!

It isnt a bad idea just as long as the beer tent is much bigger than it usually is. Oh yeah and cheaper because £2.50 - £3.00 for a can is way over the top and just a way for the council to earn extra money.
