ASYLUM seekers and refugees from Afghanistan will be hosting an event in Tockholes this weekend to introduce their culture to the people of the borough.

The event has been organised by Darwen Asylum Seekers and Refugee Enterprise (DARE) and will take place at the village hall on Saturday from 5pm to 9pm.

The Afghan community of the area will be introducing visitors to their music and food and giving them an understanding of what the country is all about.

John East, one of the founders of DARE, said: “We would like people to come along and find out the truth about Afghanistan.

“These are people who have escaped a major conflict area and we want to show that we are trying to integrate them into our community so that in turn they can contribute to the welfare of the country.”

Tickets for adults will be £6 and children can enter for £3.

All asylum seekers and refugees will be free.

All tickets can be purchased from Mr East by emailing eastiseast2004@yahoo.co.uk or calling 07885 595189.

The evening will be sponsored by the Rotary Club of Darwen.

Mr East recently received the Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of the support he has given to those who have fled conflict areas.

DARE meets every Wednesday night at the Central United Reformed Church and refugees and asylum seekers can go and learn English.
