A MOTORCYCLIST who was impaled on a barbed wire fence after an accident is appealing for help in tracing the driver who "forced him of the road."

Systems analyst Jason Catterall, 33, of Delphinium Way, Lower Darwen, was travelling to work at around 7.30am when a car sped past him in Preston Road, just outside Ribchester.

He said the car was going so fast as it over took him that he was forced off the road and landed stomach-first on a barb wire fence.

He was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital where he was kept in overnight and treated for bruising to his abdomen.

Police confirmed they were looking in to Monday's incident and were asking for witnesses to come forward.

And Mr Catterall said his badly damaged Yamaha Aerox scooter would remain in the garage for good because he had now bought himself a Ford Fiesta for future journeys to work.

He said: "I had my full leathers on at the time and I was glad I did because it could have been a lot worse, I'm very lucky.

"My chest and arms are bruised and very sore after it.

"A car went past me and I was doing 45mph at the time.

"It just left me with no room on the road and had to swerve which forced me in to the fence.

"I bought the bike because the insurance and running costs were lower but now I've got the car, it's just not worth the hassle any more."

A woman living across from the site of the crash came out and helped Mr Catterall along with a car driver who was following him at the time.

Mr Catterall, who has had the scooter for four years, was on his way to work at AJ Wood Plant Ltd, Cumeragh Lane, Whittingham.

And wife Candida Catterall, 34, was incensed by the actions of the driver who has not been traced by police.

She said: "We got the bike in an attempt to be more environmentally friendly but when things like this happen you wonder whether it was worth it."

A police spokesman said: "The motorcyclist said he was forced off the road as he was overtaken by a vehicle but when we arrived at the scene he said he could not remember what make it was. We are investigating the incident and are appealling for any witnesses to come forward."

Anyone with information should ring 08451 253545 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 .

This is an amazing read. I'm tempted to offer my own view but all I will say is you should see the carnage over here. There are lots of what I call vacum cleaners over here and believe me, most normal people would not entertain riding one if they so the carnage. When it rains it is amazing, you can stand on a corner and take bets how long before one comes unstuck. Fortuneately it's usually just the biker that is injured. They know the risk so they takes their chance.

As a keen motorcyclist and car rider I'm unbiased...true there are so many car drivers (particularly those that have never ridden a bike) that behave like complete idiots around motorbikes but what I don't understand is how an overtaking car that didn't come into contact with the bike forced it off the road? Fair enough had it been coming in the opposite direction he may have had to swerve to avoid a collision but it does sound like Mr Catterall has panicked and lost control of his scooter?
He must have passed his CBT to be riding but how much experience does he actually have, I notice the L plates are still on his bike which means he hasn't passed his bike test yet, the CBT is just that compulsory BASIC training. I would urge Mr Catterall not to be put off by this aggressive and intimidating driver and get back in the saddle as soon as (I was knocked off in October (also by a careless motorist who pulled out of a junction without looking properly) but I couldn't wait for my bike to be repaired so I could get back to two wheeled motoring, don't let the careless few put you off and never be intimidated by an @arsehole with 4 or more wheels.

Hi there - Candida you say the speeding driver who knocked him off his bike, the article doesnt say anything about him being knocked off just that it was going so fast that it forced him off the road. Reads a bit like he lost control in all honesty, but I do agree everyone has the right to ride / drive what they like. Good on you for doing your bit for the environment, pity your giving up & going to two cars!

Nobody will ever win this argument, the 50cc scooter riders that are limited to 30mph will blame the car drivers for overtaking (although they shouldn't need to unless its a 40 or higher limit), then you get the crotch rocket riders with 125cc and over who think they have to overtake everything because they have quicker acceleration!

This Khan geezer on the other hand sounds like one of the many idiots on UK roads that saved the coupons from Kellogg’s boxes to get a driving licence! You'll soon change your attitude on the road when you've been close to killing yourself or someone else!!

Khan... You're an effin idiot... Even people like me who don't ride motorbikes worry about your type on the road. One point I'd like to make though. A scooter really is asking for it unless you have a decent sized engine, surely you'd be better off with a propper bike with a bit of arse to it, idiots like khan would be less likely to want or have to overtake you.

This is my husband you are all calling. He is a responsible professional man on a scooter. It wasn't a big bike and he is not a boy racer. We werew simply doing what the government encourages us to do and not run two cars. Bikes have every right to be on the rode if they are driven sensibly. Jason was driving sensibly. Not one of you has mentioned the speeding driver who knocked him off his bike and drove off not knowing whether he was alive or dead. How is that fair? How is it fair to critisize Jason. What exactly did he do wrong? Moreover, you have no right to comment on him personally as you do not know him. I admit some bikers and some car drivers make mistakes but this was not his fault.I certainly would not wish this on any of you so stop wishing it on us.

I love the way small minded people always blame the biker when it is a fact that 90% of the time it is the careless driving of the car driver not the biker... Get well soon xxx

I have driven both and can see the argument for car drivers being a$$ holes.

I do however think many motorcyclists put themselves in danger and create their own demise.

Pick up any local paper after a sunny bank holiday weekend and there is always a couple of bikers wiped out somewhere.

I don't think i would have a motorcycle given to me these days.

I think you'll find,Kahn,(although of course there are exceptions) that some ignorant car drivers hasten 'their turn' up for them-always look out for bikers, and be careful!

I dont understand.

why do they ride moterbikes and then complain when they get injured.

Its like putting your hand in fire, then complaining that you got burnt.

accidents are enivitable, but motorcyclists just speed their turn up tbh
