DARWEN is going green in a one-off event to encourage people to recycle.

Blackburn with Darwen Council is calling on residents in the town to go along to Darwen Market Square for a series of environmentally friendly activities.

The council has secured funding for the first ever Darwen Goes Green on June 14 between 10am to 3pm.

A recycling relay race is one of the events where teams will compete against each other in a bid to put the most correct rubbish items into the correct bins.

Blackburn with Darwen Council's mascot Recycling Rover will be on hand to judge who is the fastest at sorting through the recyclables and non-recyclables.

Other activities planned for the day and around the market include paper making workshops, Funky Junk music performance, King Foo 'Green' performance, pizza making demonstration using local produce, cycling information and bike checks, calculate your carbon footprint, and free energy saving light bulbs There will be lots of prizes up for grabs. Darwen Market hessian bags will be available for 50p on the day only.

The event is funded by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and European Regional Development Fund.

Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration at the council, said: "This is an excellent fun way for the whole family to discover and learn about saving the planet. It is important that children understand from an early age the reasons why we are going green' in order to give them and their children a better future."

There will also be a number of displays in the market annexe with information on what the public can do to reduce the negative effects of daily life on the environment. There will be lots of free giveaways throughout the day from all the different stalls.

Before BWD try to educate the people of Darwen they should educate their workforce in how not to constantly send out faulty rolls of clear sacks!

It really is beyond a joke when week after week you receive the new roll of sacks that you have once again requested for them to go straight back out for recycling as they are totally useless.

I and others know how to recycle but if you can't supply the goods which we pay for in our council tax then no wonder folk give up!

Blondie, good point but they can't be as bad as our collection team. I can only assume they leave what they consider to be too much? What is the point when each week we have to drive to the local recycling depot because we recycle as much as we can? Are BWDC just going through the motions are are they committed to this as they claim?
