Darwen Grand Prix is on the start grid

THE third annual Darwen pedal car grand prix takes place on Monday, with a record 15 teams set to be on the starting grid.

There were fears the event would be dropped after two successful previous events as the council elections caused complications.

But volunteers desperate to keep it going stepped in to help out.

Racers are advised to be in town by 11am for a safety meeting in The Bridgewater pub at noon. The race will get under way between 1.30pm and 2pm.

One of the organisers John Pocock said: “People are better off parking on the market rooftop car park, then they can easily walk down to the starting line with their pedal car.

“We have a couple of teams coming all the way from Manchester. There should be about 15 teams taking part, which is more than we have had before.”

The relay race sees teams race around a circuit that starts outside the Co-op in Railway Road, through the bus station, a loop of Market Street, back through the bus station and to the start line.

Teams can change drivers as often as they want and the winner is the team that completes the most laps in two hours.
