Darwen and Rossendale top of the single parent families ‘league’

ROSSENDALE and Darwen has by far the highest proportion of single parent families of any parliamentary constituency in East Lancashire, new figures reveal.

With 5,000, 42 per cent of the total, it is far higher than the national average of 25 per cent putting it in the top 30 of the United Kingdom.

While the rest of East Lancashire is around the UK mean figure, Ribble Valley, with 18 per cent of families with a lone head (2,000) is the lowest proportion.

The figures, provided by the Office for National Statistics show Blackburn has 3,000 lone parent families or 23 per cent and Burnley 3,000, 29 per cent.

Chorley has 3,000, 23 per cent; Hyndburn 3,000, 26 per cent; and Pendle 3,000, 27 per cent.

Across the UK there were 1.926 million lone parent families in 2010 - the last year figures are available for. This is the highest proportion of single head households with children of any major European country.

The places with the highest proportions are the urban hearts of London, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds.

My sister is a single mum because her fella fecked off after my neice was born... She probably earns alot more than you!
Must admit it turns my stomach to see the tracksuit and white sock brigade giving a pasty or sausage roll to the child in pram - usually not single because I often think who the hell would *cough* that! The lad is often nearby and that makes me think how can they get benefits when I can get naff all when I look for a new job!

You can choose your friends but, unfortunately, you can't choose your family and gutterpress is correct in that sausage rolls seem to be the staple diet of some children's lunches i.e. I saw a relative giving a Greggs sausage roll to their grandchild. The whole family is on benefits and the relative parades around Darwen on a mobility scooter and has a motability car even though they don't need one.

That's right knock a parent when there down, not all single parents feed there offspring on greggs sausage rolls,my sons partner walked out and left him with two gorgeous little boys,7yr old and 10 mth,he ended up losing his job because he had to put his boys first, they get a healthy diet, fruit and veg and good home cooked meals, what he gets off the government for his boys goes on his boys,he doesn't drink or smoke, his boys are his life, they are loved and taken care of,unlike a lot of parents who chose to spend there benefits on themselves,so please don't judge all single parents, there are good ones out there.

If they are claiming benefits they are not entitled to (i.e . mobility scooter & car) then report them to the Benefit Fraud Hotline 0800 854 440 or write to NBFH PO BOX 224, Preston. PR1 1GP.

Please do not tar all single parents with the same brush. I am a single parent who has ALWAYS worked and have gone without myself to give my child the best opportunities in life (on an income which I know for a fact is far less than most people on benefits!). The system seems designed to penalise those who do work (and set their children a good example), whilst rewarding those who rely on the state to support themselves and their children.

But surely if this was the case then everyone would be on the dole / benefits ? Facts are that there are lots more folk working now (about 2 million more) than compared to 1997.

In general (ok, there are exceptions) foklk are better off in work than not.

Don't hate the players, hate the game.

Tax credits have a lot to answer for.

Thing is, most of the single parents are not single at all, they simply live apart from their partner to maximise benefits.
