Rossendale and Darwen MP Jake Berry backs new skills’ initiative

AN East Lancashire MP has commended Goverment plans which aim to help people of all ages gain new skills and improve their chances of getting a well-paid job.

Rossendale and Darwen MP Jake Berry spoke after the Government announced that the number of young people starting apprenticeships had increased by 63 per cent in the coalition’s first year.

Mr Berry said: “More people than ever before are starting an apprenticeship. Thousands of people now have the opportunity to do an apprenticeship to degree level, and we finally have a Careers Service that can meet the needs of young people and adults alike.”

There have also been plans laid out for specially-tailored loans, similar to those recieved by undergraduates, which would be made available to those aged 24 and over — only to be repaid once the learner starts earning an income which is over a threshold value.

Oh wow, the tories are allowing adults to get higher education to help get a well paid job then payback later. This was free under a labour government.
However you could always be an M.P no qualifications needed.

Didn't Tory MP Nick Bowles recently have free Hebrew lessons paid for via an expenses claim. I don't see him making any move to repay his tuition and training despite him probably attaining the earning threshold. Then again suggestions have been made that it wasn't done to further his career; some people have alleged that it was to communicate with his new partner who happens to be an Israeli. Similarly the multi-millionaire culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has also had £3000 of Mandarin lessons and coincidently he married a Chinese woman two years ago. I know it's a cliché, but it is one rule for them and another for us. Education and training should be a right. Let's face it, when people get better, well paid jobs the increase in tax revenue and the need not to claim top up benefits or unemployment benefits will fund the training.
