Strongman to guest at Darwen Gala day

THE three-times UK’s Strongest Man Adrian Smith will be the main attraction at Saturday’s Darwen Gala.

The 47th annual event, which begins at 12.30pm with the floats procession from the Anchor pub in Blackburn Road, will also feature Cheer Valley Cheerleaders, Darwen Brass and the Accrington Pipe Band at the main arena in Borough Road.

The Mighty Smith, who once finished fifth in the World’s Strongest Man, will perform a variety of impressive feats, including tearing up catalogues, bending six-inch nails with his teeth and holding an occupied chair – with his mouth!

The gala will be officially opened by Darwen Town Council mayor Eileen Entwistle, MP Jake Berry and Blackburn with Darwen mayor Zamir Khan.

The first presentation of awards from the Crown Paints and Darwen Town Council Community Awards will also be handed out.

Gala committee chairman John Sturgess said: “We are all hoping that we get good weather for this year’s gala, although whatever the weather I know that we Darreners will not let it dampen our spirits.”
