HESTON Blumenthal and his chefs will be enjoying an oversized tea party with the people of East Lancashire today.

The celebrity chef has created giant triple-layer biscuits to dunk in a giant tea urn in the centre of Darwen from 2.30pm.

And the chef, renowned for his unusual takes on some English classic dishes, was in the area yesterday as preparations for filming got under way.

He popped into the East Lancashire Hospice shop in Bridge Street where he spoke to manager Jill Holden and volunteer Lynn Perkins about coffee breaks.

Jill said: “He came to see what biscuits we liked and talked to us in front of the camera.

“He bought a tea set as well, so we made some money out of it! Heston and the crew were all really nice.”

The team took the biscuits to the kitchens at Westholme School in Blackburn where they were coated.

Vivienne Davenport from the school said: “They have been delightful.

“We are glad we have been able to accommodate them and they were happy with the facilities.”

I have been to concerts at Westholme and the shortbread is fabulous almost worth attending just to get a biscuit. I have been known to rejoin the queue once or twice ;-)

I remember a strange "tea" - after 5 o' clock time that was your evening meal...Lancashire cheese crumbled on a plate and an egg broken in the middle. It was then put into the oven to melt/cook and then served up with sliced bread to "mop it up" This meal was a Tuesday meal as each day seemed to have a "daily menu"--Mon-Stew, Tues-Cheese and egg/onoin. Weds-sausages(bought from the Co-Op in Marsh house) Thus-Shilling mixture- I would take a bowl to the chipshop and (as practiced "shilling mixture with vinegar please) and ai was given a steaming bowl of chips and a large portion of mushy peas on top!
