Darwen youngsters get arty for contest

DARWEN Library has been swamped with almost 300 paintings and drawings by local primary school children for an art competition organised by the Friends of Darwen Library.
Every spare bit of space at the library has been covered by entries for the Jubilee Tower-themed competition, which has £160 in prize money, thanks to a donation from Darwen Civic Society.
Librarian Mary Painter said: “We have had a tremendous response and a lot of the work is really excellent and imaginative.
“We hope every child comes into the library to see their work on display.”
Prize money has been increased because of the high number of entries and there are now two £50 first prizes in junior and senior sections, two runners-up prizes of £10 and eight highly commended awards of £5.
The winners will be announced at a coffee morning on Saturday.
Organiser Harold Heys was disappointed that several primary schools hadn’t found time to put in a few entries.
He said: “It will be a long time before Darwen’s next Jubilee art competition.”
